Welcome to Beautycounter!

I have been around the block on my skin care and beauty routine, which let me just say, is minimal.  There are days when I wear nothing (although I've tried to wear SOMETHING every day, just so I don't scare my friends away).  I am a simple gal that knows how to get dolled up for a night out on the town, but rarely puts that much effort in on a daily basis.

When my journey towards better health began, I knew nothing about what "Safe Ingredients" meant.  And when I started shopping for organic foods and began recognizing the more "Natural Brands" of toothpaste and skincare regimes I thought I had made it.

And then came my daughter.  I quickly realized that everything we put on and in her body impacted her health, literally.  Even the air she breathed and the water she drank made a difference.  Her little system was so sensitive and susceptible to our whole world that it took months for us to remedy those things and still struggle with our fair share of sensitivities.

Now, I'm talking to you Momma's....Every. Single. Bit of what you put in your body or absorb through your skin ... even the water you bathe in can transfer chemicals to your babies in utero.  What's even more scary is if we haven't detoxed our systems prior to pregnancy, things like heavy metals, pesticides, and chlorine can permeate the placenta wall and have real effects on your little ones.

I am not a all hell fire and brimstone kind of person, but let me tell you, I have experienced this first hand.  And my gorgeous daughter didn't even come from my uterus. That's right, I had no control of what she had been exposed to and no history of what her biological mother or grandmother had been exposed to.  So let me just say this:

Heavy metals, exorbitant amounts of chemicals including pesticides and fertilizers, and even radiation exposure where found in her system.  Her little liver couldn't handle the amount of toxicity she had been exposed to and she was not able to process all of the real food I was putting in her body.

ALL THAT BEING SAID, chemicals mater.  For our family, and for yours.

What we put on our body is just as important as what we put in our bodies.  In the case of cosmetics, toxic chemicals enter our bodies directly through our airways when we inhale particles from powders and sprays, and through our skin, lips and nails when we apply products. We know that even small doses of ingredients can have a big effect when absorbed through the skin.

Welcome to Beautycounter!

Beautycounter defines Toxic as those chemicals that can harm cells or organs, cause neurological damage, and/or alter important biological systems.  Even tiny amounts of some chemicals used in everyday products can have huge impacts.  Endocrine disrupters like BPA, parabens and phtalates that mimic or block hormones, can have major health impacts because they mirror the function of our real hormones.  Which then causes our bodies to stop functioning properly because it's being "supplemented" and can rest or shut down.  (think birth control).

A few facts to ponder:

  • Right now in the U.S., it is completely legal for companies to use toxic chemicals in the products that we put on our bodies every day - even if the ingredients are known to cause cancer or other health problems.
  • The last law that was passed in the U.S. governing the cosmetic industry was in 1938 and this does not provide the FDA the power to ask cosmetic companies for safety data or issue recalls of cosmetics found to be unsafe.
  • In the U.S. only 11 ingredients are restricted or banned from cosmetics when the European Union bans 1,400.

Of course, there are several companies that strive to make safer products.  One of my favorite resources for learning more about a particular product's safety is the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep cosmetic database.

All this being said, come with me on this journey to start replacing those products that you use most and let's have safe, well performing makeup, and non-toxic skincare regime for the whole family.  I've started adding my favorites to the store with more to come.  I'll be offering specials and discounts as well as group shipping to the all Farm Stand customers and hope to help you clean up your beauty and skincare regimes all while you eat really awesome food!
